In Loving Memory

Morton Sloan, born in the Bronx in 1939, was true to his roots. A Yankee fan to his dying day, he maintained the central office for his stores in the Bronx, determined that he never wanted to be “too big for my britches.”

After graduating from Brandeis University he married Judith Silverson, another Brandeis grad, and then went on to NYU to receive an MBA before joining Oppenheimer & Company as an institutional analyst. An interesting opportunity brought him to the firm of Muriel (Micki) Siebert, the first woman to have a seat on the NY stock exchange. Then came the end of fixed commissions; negotiated commissions meant the death of research firms. Discount brokerage firms blossomed, and Morty eyed his father’s business of three Associated supermarkets with interest.

Over the course of decades, he founded and grew Morton Williams Supermarkets with his brother William, son David, son-in-law Avi, and nephew Steven – a chain of 17 stores. He was an innovator who introduced salad bars; in-store seating; chefs in every store; and grab and go dinners so good they received high marks from Trip Advisor.

Wanting to enrich his life, he enjoyed a full subscription at the Metropolitan Opera Company; a series with the NY Philharmonic; another with the Chamber Music Society and took courses at the

Juilliard evening division. He studied French at NYU, world history at the New School and signed up for a lecture series at the 92nd Street Y. One of his favorite activities was skiing, which he pursued out West, in Switzerland, France and Canada.

Morty was extremely charitable, honored by many prestigious organizations; Boy Scouts of America; Master Voices, a highly regarded New York City-based chorus; and Landmark on Main Street, a theater in Port Washington and Temple Beth Israel in Port Washington. He gave generously to Friends of the IDF; Jewish National Fund, Innovation Africa and Hadassah.

He enjoyed loving relationships with his children Liz and David, their spouses Avi and Silvia and his grandchildren: Julia, Jack, Jonathan, Antonia, Vivian and Joseph.
